Keynote Address & Live Q&A: Mission to Mars - Planetary Protection,
Contamination Control, and the Mars Perseverance Rover
Tuesday, May 4, 9 - 9:50 a.m.
Moogega Cooper, Planetary Protection Lead, NASA's JPL and Lead Planetary Protection Engineer for Mars 2020
Thora Maltais, Contamination Control Engineer, NASA's JPL and member of contamination control team for Mars 2020
Meet two key engineers who worked on NASA's Perseverance Mars rover, which landed on the Red Planet's surface in February 2021. Scientists wanted to be confident that any signs of ancient life they might observe in samples returned to Earth are from Mars, not Earth, so the sample tubes had to be the cleanest hardware ever launched into space. Thanks to Moogega Cooper and Thora Maltais, NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory met the challenge. In this exclusive keynote address, hear Moogega and Thora discuss the mission, planetary protection and contamination control requirements imposed on the mission, and its implications on cleanroom processes.

Dr. Moogega (pronounced Moo-ji-gae) Cooper received her B.A. in Physics from Hampton University in 2006. She then enrolled in Drexel University where she received her Masters and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering with a concentration in thermal fluid sciences. Her dissertation studies involved non-equilibrium plasma sterilization of spacecraft materials so it was a logical transition to work for the Jet Propulsion Laboratory's (JPL) Planetary Protection Group. She has been at JPL for 11 years, working on spacecraft to include Mars Science Laboratory, InSight, and most recently Mars 2020. She was involved in the Mars 2020 Mission as the Lead of Planetary Protection and has transitioned on to leading the next endeavor with the Europa Lander concept. She is also involved in developing sterilization capabilities that could potentially be applied to the returned sample from Mars.

Dr. Thora Maltais received her B.A. in Biochemistry concentrating in cell and molecular biology from Colby College in Waterville, Maine. She continued her academic studies in the field of chemistry by earning her M.S. from Clemson University and PhD from Purdue University with graduate work focused on developing rapid pathogen detection methods for the medical field. She began her career at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in 2017 researching chemical pathways for metabolic reactions under early Earth ocean conditions before joining the Contamination Control Group later in the same year. After completing her work on the Mars 2020 adaptive caching assembly and sample tubes, she is now supporting several fight projects while also working to expand Contamination Control cleanroom protocols and standards at JPL.
